From the Ashes by Athena Barnim absolutely wrecked me in the best possible way.

Never has a book made me feel every emotion so completely. Grief. Love. Relief. Irritation. Understanding. Anger. Hope. I laughed with these characters, and I cried with them. Athena didn’t just write a story — she made me live it.

Sara felt painfully real to me. She’s the kind of woman who carries everything on her shoulders, who stays busy so she doesn’t have to sit with the weight of it all… until burnout hits. Watching her navigate grief, responsibility, and the fear of letting herself feel again was so relatable it almost hurt. I saw so much of myself in her.

And Jack? Jack is the quiet strength so many of us lean on. The man who never says no when someone needs help. His patience, loyalty, and steady presence balanced Sara so beautifully. Their dynamic felt authentic — messy, frustrating, tender, and deeply human.

I also loved how much more descriptive this novel felt compared to Athena’s first. The imagery was richer, the characters easier to picture, the setting more immersive. I could see it all — the forests, the small-town warmth, the quiet moments that carried so much weight.

This story doesn’t shy away from grief. It leans into it. It shows how heavy love can be when it’s tangled with loss — and how sometimes the most beautiful growth comes from the ashes we never asked for.

Five stars isn’t enough. This one stays with you.
